Dr Hilton Kaplan is a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist in Claremont, Cape Town and consultant to the Chrysalis Clinic, which he and Dr Graham Stapleton started in 2006.

Dr Kaplan matriculated from Muir College in 1969 and studied medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand obtaining an MB BCh in 1976.

He completed his internship in 1977 at the Johannesburg General Hospital followed by a two year stint in the South African Defence Force working at Mission Hospitals, Katatura Hospital in Windhoek, and as a registrar in Medicine at Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto.

In 1980 and 1981 he worked as Senior Medical Officer in the Emergency Unit at the new Johannesburg Hospital and thereafter as a Registrar in medicine at Baragwanath Hospital and at the Johannesburg General Hospital obtaining the FCP (SA) in Internal Medicine in 1983.

Dr Kaplan relocated to Cape Town in 1984 and was Senior Registrar in the Endocrine Department at Groote Schuur Hospital. He then became a consultant in the Department of Medicine for a short time before leaving to start private practice in 1987.

He was also Senior Consultant to the Hypertension Clinic from 1986-1988.

Dr Kaplan obtained an M.Med (UCT) (Int.Med) in 1988.

He has completed a postgraduate course in Endocrinology at Harvard University, Boston, and in 2007 attended an advanced course in Constant Glucose Monitoring in Switzerland.

Dr Kaplan has served on numerous Pharmaceutical Product Advisory Boards in South Africa and is an inaugural advisory board member of the Johnson and Johnson Diabetes Education Institute in Paris (2008). He travels extensively to local and international Conferences and is actively involved locally in Continuing Medical Education, lecturing extensively and holding workshops and symposia on various topics, particularly diabetes.

He is a senior Academy member of the Centres for Diabetes and Metabolism: Diabetes Managed Care Program of South Africa and is an accredited Insulin Pump Centre.

Dr Kaplan is a member of SEMDSA (Society of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes South Africa), SAHS (South African Hypertension Society), LASSA (Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society South Africa), SASSO (South Africa Obesity Society), Lifeworks (Disability and Insurance Network) and the Chrysalis Clinic, a specialized unit for bariatric surgery.

He was previously medical advisor to the Western Cape Diabetes Association and is at present consultant physician to the Western Cape Child Welfare Adoption Board.

His areas of special interest include diabetes and endocrinology, disorders of metabolism, obesity and non-invasive cardiovascular medicine with special focus on preventative cardiovascular disease.

Besides a busy consulting practice he has also been involved for many years in conducting clinical trials and is GCP (Good Clinical Practice) accredited.

In his free time his interests include music, literature, film, photography, gardening and sport.

He is married with three children.
