Dr Stapleton graduated MBChB from the University of Cape Town in 1978.

He qualified as Fellow of the South African College of Surgeons in 1989 and received his M.Med degree from the University of Cape Town for a dissertation on gastric mucus.

Dr Stapleton spent the year 1990 doing research in the UCT/MRC Liver Centre and published some of the research findings in the British Journal of Surgery 1998; 85:202-7.

Dr Stapleton worked as a junior consultant at Groote Schuur Hospital from January 1991 to June 1993. During this period he worked in surgical oncology and endocrine surgery (1991), hepatobiliary and upper gastrointestinal tract surgery (1992) and vascular surgery (1993).

He spent two years (1993-1995) in Britain in Belfast, Northern Ireland and at the Hammersmith Hospital, London, doing advanced training in hepatobiliary, pancreatic, endocrine and gastrointestinal surgery.

He became interested in laparoscopic bariatric surgery in 2003. He attended his first course, run by Dr Antonio Lacy, in Barcelona and he visited Prof. Karl Miller in Salzburg, Austria in October 2004. From 2004 to 2006 he attended further courses run in South Africa by Prof. Hans Lonroth from Sweden, by Prof. Hein van der Walt from South Africa and Prof. G.Cadierre from Belgium in August 2005, by Prof Jim Toulli and by Professors van der Walt, Toulli and Nicolas Scopinaro in August 2006.

In 2005 he established a multidisciplinary team for managing morbidly obese patients at the Kingsbury Hospital. He did his first laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in June 2005.
