Respiratory Disease -

Respiratory disorders (problems associated with breathing) are common in obesity.

One of the main problems is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where patients have snoring and gasping attacks during the night. Because of the disturbed sleep they experience chronic tiredness during the day.

Another problem is that of obesity hypoventilation (OH), where less air is taken into the lungs, resulting in higher levels of carbon dioxide in the blood.

OSA is dramatically improved by weight loss, and there have also been case reports of patients having improvement with OH after significant weight loss.
