Hypertension

Hypertension is defined as high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is recorded as the top (systolic) pressure reading over the lower (diastolic) pressure reading e.g. 120/80.

The higher one’s blood pressure, the higher is the risk for strokes and heart disease, in the form of heart attacks and heart failure.

Blood pressure is classified according to the table below:

Category SBP / DBP
Optimal < 120 / 80
Prehypertension 1 120-129 / 80-84
Prehypertension 2 130-139 / 850-89
Hypertension ≥ 140 / 90
→ Stage 1 140-159 / 90-99
→ Stage 2 160-179 / 100-109
→ Stage 3 ≥ 180 / 110

Research has shown that losing weight has a beneficial effect on reducing blood pressure, and therefore constitutes a major part of the treatment regimen.
